Toothaches can be really obnoxious, and generally painful. If you have a toothache, you probably have some questions, including how to relieve the throbbing discomfort. We would like to help you by offering some information and advice on how to handle toothaches, including preventing them in the future.

Unfortunately, there are many reasons you may have a toothache. Some common reasons are:

– infection in the gums
– abscessed tooth
– cracked tooth
– food debris stuck in between teeth or in your gums
– cavity
– sinus infection

Let’s start with the easiest example. If you have a piece of food stuck in your teeth or gums, you can use dental floss to gently remove the offending particle. NEVER use pointed instruments–including wooden toothpicks–to try and remove food particles from in between teeth. This can lead to a severe oral injury to the gums and enamel. Swishing with salt water can also be helpful.

For more serious issues, including a cavity, gum infection, or an abscessed or cracked tooth, visit your doctor as soon as possible for treatment. Dr. Ronald Fuhrmann can help relieve you of the pain and discomfort. If you suspect a sinus infection, please visit your physician.

To prevent toothaches in the future, take great care of your smile. Brush for two minutes twice a day, floss once a day, and include over-the-counter therapeutic mouthwash at your dentist’s recommendation. Remember to wear a mouthguard when playing contact sports and activities, to help prevent oral injury. Additionally, visit your dentist twice a year to check for signs of damage or decay.
