What is TMJ?
The TMJ is the temporomandibular joint. Sometimes simply called the jaw joint, this joint connects the lower jaw to the rest of the head. When this joint becomes stressed, misaligned, or damaged in any way, it may result in a condition called TMJ disorder (TMD). While the causes of TMJ disorders vary by patient, common causes include arthritis in the TMJ, stress, bruxism (clenching and grinding of the teeth), movement of the disc between the ball and socket of the joint, or trauma to the head, neck, or jaw.
What are the symptoms of TMJ?
Common signs of TMJ disorder include the following:
• A clicking, grinding, or popping sound in the TMJ when you open and close your mouth
• Pain when moving the jaw, such as for chewing, eating, speaking, and yawning
• A locked or stuck jaw
• Inability to open your mouth wide
• Chronic jaw pain
• Swelling on the side of the face
• Frequent headaches
• Pain in the face, head, neck, ears, or shoulders
