What is gum disease?
Gum disease is a degenerative condition caused by bacteria in plaque and tartar (also called dental calculus). More formally known as periodontal disease, gum disease affects the gums and tissues that support the teeth. If not treated in the early stages, periodontal disease may result in receding gums, bone loss, and tooth loss. In addition, untreated gum disease has been linked to several serious health conditions, including diabetes, pregnancy complications, heart disease, hypertension (high blood pressure), stroke, and respiratory conditions.
What are the symptoms of gum disease?
The following are common signs of periodontal disease:
• Gums that bleed easily, such as when you floss and brush your teeth
• Receding gums, or teeth that look longer than usual
• Gums that are swollen and tender
• Loose teeth
• Painful chewing and eating
• Persistent bad breath or bad taste in the mouth
• Gums that are redder than usual
